Hi. For consistency reasons we use licence templates in our files. The bot browsing through new uploads couldn't find any licence template in File:Map-Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw-district-of-Los Angeles.png, even though you explicitly mentioned the file was under CC-By-SA. User:Ryan Vesey recognised the problem and added {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}}, which is the licence template corresponding to what you had written. This led User:McZusatz to mention your problem as solved. FBI Release

Pictures the FBI took are in the public domain. The FBI also releases a lot of pictures that someone else took, and unless that someone else is a Federal employee, those pictures are not in the public domain.--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:11, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Bad geocoordinates?

Can anyone figure out why these coordinates are marked as invalid? It has got me stumped. I have marked thousands of pages with coordinates, but this is the first time that Commons has told me that the coords are not valid. •••Life of Riley (T–C) 04:52, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Not everything which is publicly distributed is free. You wouldn't expect music to be free because you hear it on the radio. The same goes for publicity images on the internet. None of the content of the site is free. In the absence of a declaration to the contrary, you can expect that the entire content of that site, including the images, is subject to copyright. Why do you think copyright issues would be discussed in their privacy policy? Those things have nothing to do with one another. Their copyright policy is at the bottom of every page on the site: "© Coke Studio Pakistan 2012. All Rights Reserved." All rights reserved means this stuff is completely non-free. Auch dies reicht nicht aus. Die Veröffentlichung hier schließt ein, dass Dritte ein Foto von hier auch gewerblich nutzen dürfen. I have gone through much of your information and instructions in attempting to understand how we can discuss and actually add information to your site. I wish to enhance some truth to a specific subject as I have a personal background to a history of The deceased Philadelphia Record. A significantly connected to the history of the l930's national political scene. I am stumped. Don"t get it. How can one add to truth of USA history in your wonderful system? Cannot create category

I just attempted to create Category:Meals on Wheels, but for some strange reason the title is on the blacklist. Could an administrator please create this page for me? Thanks! Kelly (talk) 02:01, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

are from monthly free booklets distributed by Manavta Mandir, Hoshiarpur, India. They were published in the booklets over 50 years ago. I had these booklets and scanned the images. These images cannot be found anywhere else on the internet and are rare images of this author. These images are not available in their original any more. The copyright status of these images is not known given the original images are not available. I am not sure if this is enough information to publish these images on wikipedia. If it is not, please feel free to remove the images as I understand that the fair use is not accepted. Thank you. --Shivbratlal (talk) 00:39, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Template:PD-India seems to suggest that the pictures enter the public domain (free of copyright) 60 years after publication. Do you have an exact year for publication? If so, add 61 and they will be public domain on 1st January that year. -mattbuck (Talk) 00:58, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Can't upload an SVG version of a PNG

Search and Go to

Sometimes Search is activated for me and sometimes Go to. I haven't figured out any reason. I want Go to always to be default, so I can reach the pages I want just by hitting enter. Anybody knowing how to do that?

Also, when I've performed a search, the cursor is in the search-field, and then I can't navigate with arrows without first clicking outside the field. Can I change that? --Jonund (talk) 19:05, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

I can't help you with the first, but I want to add my sympathy for the second. I search for something and want to hit the space bar to page down, but it only inserts a space in the search string. WhatamIdoing (talk) 15:15, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
You can Tab ⇆ out of the search control or use the Page up and Page down keys. If you are using Monobook, the default button is Search per MediaWiki:Monobook.js (see line importScript('MediaWiki:DefaultSearch.js');). Now you have written GoButton=true; to User:Jonund/monobook.js. MediaWiki:DefaultSearch.js looks if this variable is set and if it is, it does not change anything.
Since 2 years, scripts are asynchronously loaded. This means that your user script may be loaded after MediaWiki:DefaultSearch.js which will then change the default because it doesn't know about the preference in your custom JavaScript file.
To solve this issue, I wrapped a "stop until the user's personal javascript is loaded" around the call to MediaWiki:DefaultSearch.js. I hope this solves the issue.
In future, please use window.globalSetting = value; instead of globalSetting = value; in your personal JavaScript file.

I'm sorry, but it still uses Search as default. After I have clicked Go to and the page is being loaded, that button is briefly displayed as default, but then the Search button is switched on. I don't remember whether that was so before. --Jonund (talk) 09:19, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

As for tabbing out of the search control, it's an option, but a disadvantage is that if I click an image in the list and go back, I'm taken back to the top of the page and the search field, so I have to scroll down again if I want to look at the rest of the images. derivativeFx not recognizing license

Image Approval

Hi, I am a webmaster for Fran Hauser. I created a record in sandbox, so far. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Agringaus/sandbox for Fran Hauser, President of Style & Entertainment of Time Inc. You've claimed that you personally created the first photo. Is that correct? I found a previously published higher-resolution version at https://www.charitybuzz.com/catalog_items/303625. If you actually took this photograph yourself, please provide the full resolution version with intact metadata.
File:President, Digital for Time Inc.’s Style and Entertainment Group.jpg and File:Fran Hauser, President, Digital of Time Inc.'s Style & Entertainment Group.jpg differ only in resolution. Please note that there is no reason to upload low-resolution duplicates; all files can be automatically scaled to the suitable resolution. The first time you uploaded the file, you claimed that the photograph was created by Fran Hauser, and the second time you claimed that it was created by Joseph Moran. As Fran Hauser appears to be the subject of the photograph, and it does not appear to be a self portrait, I'm more inclined to believe the latter. Indeed, the file's metadata states that Joseph Moran is the author and copyright holder. If that's the case, Fran Hauser has no legal authority to release the file into the public domain, as you have claimed that she has.
The metadata also states that "Images may not be reproduced, copied, or used in any way without (a) express written permission on our invoice stating the rights granted and the terms thereof, and (b) payment of said invoice. All images and rights relating to them, including copyright and ownership rights in the media in which the Images are stored, remain the sole and exclusive property of Photographer. Any use or additional uses not specifically stated herein require the prior written agreement of Photographer on terms to be negotiated." According to our licensing policy, we can only accept content that can be used by anyone for any purpose. Minor clarification: "If you actually took this photograph yourself, please provide the full resolution version with intact metadata."
You're not required to release the original version or to provide metadata (which might contain personal information). We recommend it because that's a fast and simple way to prove that you have the original picture, from which we infer that your fingers were the ones pushing buttons on the camera. If you don't want to provide the original image, then you can follow the directions at Commons:OTRS. Of course, if the image is "your own work" only in the sense that you copied it from another website (and perhaps changed the resolution or color balance or something), then we can't accept it at all. Adding file descriptions in another language

It's very easy: You just type in the description.
If you want to label them (recommended), then you wrap each language in the template for that language. So the English description gets wrapped in {{En}}, and a French description (for example) gets wrapped in {{Fr}}. Here's an example:
{{en|An apple and an orange}}
{{fr|Une pomme et une orange}}
which produces this:
English: An apple and an orange
Français : Une pomme et une orange
(It's not necessary to put each language on a separate line, but I prefer it. The |description= item in the usual template handles multiple paragraphs easily.) Good luck, WhatamIdoing (talk) 14:51, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

Picture for Haralson County High School Page on Wikipedia

Hi! I am new to all of this, and I have a question about the copyright/license on a picture. The picture is of the Main Building of Haralson County High School and was posted on the schools public Facebook page as a cover photo. If I want to post this picture onto the Commons, what steps should I take to make sure that it is all legal? Assuming you have that information, add the full author name (google offers several "Gaitan") and the author's year of death to the image summary. If the author died 100 years ago and you can verify that information, simply delete the warning tag and add "PD-old-100" as template (you always need atleast 1 valid Commons license tag for the image) in the licensing section of the image description. You will need verification of this permission via mail. See COM:OTRS and COM:email templates for more info about that process. Make sure the permission is free for all users for all kinds of usage, including commercial (see COM:licensing). Or as alternative solution: Get the Flickr uploader to change their license on Flickr to a free version (and add that license as template to the image summary).   • You remove the line where it says {{Remove this line and insert a license instead|year=2013|month=05|day=07}} and replace it with a legitimate license tag.   • A mere claim of "all rights reserved" doesn't create copyright on a logo that is not eligible for copyright. This is right on the edge of being complex enough to be eligible for copyright. If it's not, it just needs to be tagged with {{PD-ineligible}}. Easy admin help with free Flickr image

Apologies in advance because this looks like a scary mess, but it's not. In regards to File:Girl Sitting in Chair.jpg, I uploaded a free image from Flickr. I then noticed the metadata was incorrect because it stated "All Rights Reserved", which is no longer true (it was true up until recently). So I changed the metadata, and reuploaded the image. This would "break" the FlickreviewR bot since it hadn't gotten the chance to swing by yet. I then went ahead and tagged the image with a very specific speedy deletion request to remove the original image tagged as "All Rights Reserved", simply because this is neither true nor is it correct. But I'm worried the speedy delete tag may frighten off volunteers swinging by to clean up after the FlickreviewR. Can I have someone help me with this? I only need: #Confirm the Flickr image is free to use.

Hi Moogsi, the confusion lies entirely with me. I didn't realize first and last revisions could be suppressed before I re-uploaded the image. Could you suppress the three revisions time stamped "07:37, 14 May 2013" (most recent), "06:24, 14 May 2013" (temporary revert), and "00:06, 14 May 2013" (user created page with UploadWizard). What I did was revert so FlickreviewR could tag the image properly, and then I completely forgot to come here and update my post with that information. Attribution lines for printed, but modified images

I uploaded an image which is to be published in a magazine. The original image is an image of musical notation, a clef in D major. This file was in a second version converted to SVG, and I took this file SVG-file and added another cross, so it is now an image of a clef in A Major. My first question now would be: How could a reasonable printed attribution line look? I know the credit should go to the original author, but I'm confused, since on the page there would be an image that the original author didn't "produce" (D Major bmp vs. A Major svg). Very likely a musical notation this simple would be Public Domain ineligible (PD-simple). If so no attribution is needed. Download got cut on big files

Hello. I'm experiencing problems trying to download big files like this one:

For some reason download stops after 2 or 3 mb. Even uding a download manager, the same situation.

uploading a photo

Hi, I'm creating a wikipedia page for author Sarah Stonich, and I'm having difficulty uploading a photo of her for the page. The page is in draft form on my account page at the moment.

I requested the photo from her and she sent it to me via email. When I followed the uploading a photo prompts, however, I wasn't able to select "upload" although I thought I had satisfactorily answered the prompts. What am I doing wrong?

Categories for scanned books

Hi! I uploaded some scanned books to Commons so that we can use them in Wikisource and I am going to upload more. But I wonder what is a proper category for them. I found several categories that may apply. For instance, for books in English: Category:Scanned English texts, Category:Scanned English books, Category:Books in English, Category:English Wikisource books. Why you people delete my pictures/Images ?

I never violated any Copyright and never do it in future but you people are deleting all my pictures saying that I violated copyright . Does any one complained to you people about my pictures ? . File:Actor Nani.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. The text is different depending on the language you view it in, but the bold part is important. Most things you find on the internet are copyrighted by the creator. The file mentioned above, for example, is found uncropped here. If you took this photo, then you probably need to direct your anger at indiaglitz.com because they are stealing your work without crediting you (and somehow got hold of the original uncropped version of the photo). This is quite a nice high resolution scan from a printed document, probably a book (looking at the marks left from the printing process), which has been immediately included in the Russian article on Lieutenant-General Ivan Pavlovich. As the photograph was taken in 1965, there is quite a high probability that any copyright that applied then, has yet to expire. For clarity, the image in question is File:William G Swank.jpg, which was deleted on 17 October 2011 by Courcelles, having been tagged as lacking permission 8 days previous.

I'm very sorry this has happened, but I hope that you can understand the reason it was deleted: when something is a publicity photo, we tend to assume that the copyright rests with the author, and further tend to assume that that author is not the uploader - we get so many photos of celebrities which are clearly promotional works but are claimed as own work by anonymous accounts, and 99.99% of those will be simple copyright violations - people falsely claiming others' work as their own. We try and avoid this happening, and so when we see such a work we ask for more evidence of authorship, as we did in this case. You contacted MissVain, the person who originally tagged the file, who informed you that the file description actually states that the license is Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0), and then you have CC-BY-SA listed as well. Your Flickr account also states it is CC BY-NC-ND 3.0. It also appears as if you took the photograph, but I guess you did not? We need the direct website link to where the image came from.
While we do not disallow a mix of free and unfree licensing, it does tend to make us suspicious, especially when the given source states it is not free (in no uncertain terms). The simplest way to resolve this would be for you to simply relicense it on flickr to CC-BY-SA - that way there's no ambiguity about licence. Alternatively you can contact our OTRS team.
We take your copyright seriously - there's nothing to stop a random person having signed up with the name Tim Wayne in order to claim that they have the rights to the photo. We deleted it because we wanted to make sure we weren't infringing copyright. -mattbuck (Talk) 17:20, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

I viewed the file with w:VLC media player. The image I think is spam is in the 'album cover' dataset. My player may have just grabbed an image of the net that matched or I may have some spammish VLC corruption. The image is a single frame of a fitness company with phone number painted on a large rubber band. VLC won't let me rip the image to host on an ftp for others to see what I see. Wrong category

Hi, the pictures on http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:DB_Class_701 are tagged "Electric Multiple Units of Deutsche Bahn".

While they do have pantographs, those are for testing and for short-circuiting the catenary wire (to allow safe maintenance on the catenary wire) only. These vehicles are based on the Uerdinger Schienenbus, the famous DB Class 798 railbus, and thus are Diesel Multiple Units, powered by two Diesel engines. And they're never run in multiple mode - when they were converted from 798 to 701, the cabling that allows multiple mode was removed. -- 149.172.200.27 11:06, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

TOC failures

I just tried three different templates on Category:Images from the Canadian Copyright Collection at the British Library to try and get an alphabetical table of contents for searching images. All failed and would not return any images. Is it because it is a hidden cat or other reasons?--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:36, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

The problem is that {{Picturing Canada image}} which adds this category also adds a sort key based on photograph id number. Every image in this category is sorted between 1 and 9; if you add a table of contents and select "C", it will not find any images with this sort key. For example File:Dorothy (HS85-10-11625) original.tif is sorted at 11625, not in D. MKFI (talk) 16:16, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Permission of people depicted

If I take a photograph of someone I am clearly the copyright owner so can presumably upload it to Wikimedia Commons. But I seem to recall from somewhere that I ought also to have the permission of the person(s) depicted. Certainly when using photographs for publicity purposes for other organisations I've been required to get the models to sign a release form. What's the situation with the Commons in this respect? Hi. Please see COM:PEOPLE. In the UK, you should be OK if you have taken a photo of a person in a public place, where there is no expectation of privacy. The UK is easier in that respect than some other countries. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 12:00, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
Classic marginal examples are someone notable speaking at an event open to the public would have no expectation of privacy, even if the location were not a "public" place and even if members of the public needed a ticket, but someone notable sitting in an outdoor cafe eating a pile of pie and mash, might be considered to have an expectation of privacy, and not expect to be photographed by someone walking by on the street using a zoom lens. In the latter case, if you shouted "Hi Elvis!" at the notable person, and they smiled or waved back with their fork as you took the photo, one might reasonably assume that there was a form of tacit consent; certainly no judge would be likely to consider that photograph intrusive given a demonstrable rationale/context of consent. --Fæ (talk) 12:45, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Most likely that would not be allowed. Assuming that the plaque has some textual or artistic copyright in itself (and most do) we would need the copyright owner's permission. In the UK the level of originality needed for copyright to subsist is very small. The fact that the plaque is displayed in public does not help, unfortunately. I'm not sure about the specific case, because it depends on the exact details, but I don't believe that a plaque normally counts under the otherwise Commons-friendly Commons:Freedom of panorama#United Kingdom rules. Every photograph can be copyrighted, and unless we can prove for certain that it is not copyrighted or that the copyright has expired (usually 70 years after the photographer died, no matter when the photo was taken), then we assume that the copyright is valid. Neue Version einer GIF-Datei hochgeladen, es wird aber weiterhin die alte Version in der Dateivorschau und im Wiki-Beitrag angezeigt.

Hallo, ich habe eine neue Version der Datei http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ZyklischerBlattumlauf.gif hochgeladen. In den Ansicht Dateiversionen wird auch die richtige Datei (Rotorblattanstellungen unter über der Erklärung) angezeigt. In der großen Vorschau und im Wiki-Beitrag ist aber weiterhin die alte Version zu sehen. Ich habe die Aktualisierung der Datei ein zweitesmal probiert. Das Ergebnis ist allerdings unverändert. Was ist hier falsch gelaufen? Kann jemand eine Version der Dateiaktualisierung löschen?

Is it possible for an uploader to insist that larger images be deleted leaving only low-res versions?

My question applies to the image File:EPSON009.jpg, which was uploaded by User:アオイソラ ("Aoisora"), who appears to be the subject portrayed in the photo. The uploader replaced the original 1,808 x 1,216 file with a much smaller (326 x 220) version, and has recently nominated the entire file for deletion on the grounds that it compromises his personality rights. I'm not experienced enough to comment on whether this is a valid reason for deletion, but my secondary question applies to a copy of the same image recently uploaded by the same user at File:個展「饗宴」後藤 仁（GOTO JIN）.jpg. This is also a small (326 x 220) image, and includes an unnecessary watermark. I would like to ask whether it is permissible for other editors (e.g. me) to upload the large 1,808 x 1,216 version of File:EPSON009.jpg as a new version of File:個展「饗宴」後藤 仁（GOTO JIN）.jpg? I'm having trouble understanding the reason for the nomination, but it seems to be something to do with the copyrighted painting in the photo. I think the idea is that if the image is low-res enough, then the paintings will be de minimis, as they will not be detailed enough to be infringing. Problem with gallery on user page

Hello,

When I display this image (File:Prince of Orange royal 19th century.PNG) on my homepage, it won't display in the gallery it is in, yet every other image does and it is marked up the same way as: File:Prince of Orange royal 19th century.PNG|Arms of the Dutch Crown prince, the prince of Orange in the 19th Century

I must be making some obvious error, but I can't see it.

Hello, There is no file named "File:Prince of Orange royal 19th century.PNG" on Commons. You are trying to display on your Commons user page a file that is hosted on the English-language Wikipedia. Files hosted on Commons can be displayed in the pages of Wikipedia, but files hosted on Wikipedia cannot be displayed in the pages of Commons. The file must be uploaded to Commons before it can be displayed on Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:07, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

You can just upload it normally to Commons. Much simpler and faster to upload it yourself than to tag it for moving and wait for someone else to upload it. Image on website only 1x1px

Sometimes images on websites (for instance this) are only 1x1px when downloaded. It's strange, since they display well on the websites. Can anybody explain why that is so and whether it's possible to download a version that can be uploaded to Commons? --Jonund (talk) 20:25, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Protest signs with photos of unknown copyright status

I have a various photos taken at public protests in the United States of people holding signs with one or more photos whose origin and copyright is unknown; all have some sort of hand written or printed text on or about them making it clear they are protest signs. Can my photos of these signs be used here? (I see others have been put up on commons. Mine are likely to be challenged on some articles where I might want to use them, so at least I can cover the copyright base in advance.) Thanks. Carolmooredc (talk) 18:28, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

  • A bit of a gray zone, but in general for contemporary US photos (since the US adopted the Berne Convention), if the sign raises to the level of originality to be copyrightable, and the photo is primarily or exclusively of the sign, we'd need permission from the person who designed the sign. Conversely: (1) if the sign is just a small amount of uncopyrightable text (e.g. "No War" or "No new taxes") written in a manner that did not rise to the level of significant graphic design, then there would be no copyright issue (2) if the sign was primarily of a person and they happen to be carrying a sign, that's probably OK on a de minimis basis, much like the person's clothes. - Jmabel ! talk 01:05, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
Of course, in real life people at political protests (as opposed perhaps to commercial artist protests, for example) usually want their signs to be photographed to get their message out. In any case, it seems if there is a proper mix of photo of unknown copyright status, non-remarkable text and person carrying sign it should not be a problem. The problem is, there's a line between "want their signs to be photographed to get their message out" and "are willing to license under a Free license". I think if a corporation used their sign in advertising to make the point of how loony their objectors were, many protesters would turn to any source, including copyright, to stop that, even though a Free license must be permissible to use like that. Free licenses are hard masters; I know there are uses of my photos on Commons where the user had better cross their i's and dot their t's as per the license requirements, because I would be looking for a justification to force them to stop using it. We can't assume that other people have accepted the limitations of a free license.--Prosfilaes (talk) 11:35, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
A photograph of a protest sign that itself contains a photograph of unknown origin is inherently problematic. If your photograph depicts a whole bunch of said signs, then the photos on the signs are probably de minimis. But if it's a photograph of one sign that shows a photograph, it's a derivative work and not allowed here. Powers (talk) 15:24, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
Are these "pictures of signs" or "pictures of people holding signs"? Something like File:Halloween92McGovern.jpg is probably fine, even if the sign itself contains copyrighted works. I have found that many at en:wp don't know copyright as well as commons. I have seem them actually delete many public domain images that are used as fair use there. One recent one is File:Nighthawks by Edward Hopper 1942.jpg which I came across over there. After a discussion at Commons:Village pump/Copyright I decided to upload it. With the very helpful research by others here it will probably survive deletion. Commons:Village pump/Copyright may be your best forum for copyright in the future. We are not without drama with copyrights as you can see with Commons:Deletion requests/File:NewarkJustice1.jpg which was also kept after a bit of drama.   • Assuming you do have the rights, you'll have to go through the procedure at COM:OTRS. I have some photos taken by a friend. He is very happy for them to be uploaded to Commons, but doesn't have the ability to do so himself. Can I upload them? In which case what form of words do I need to use? And does it make a difference if he wishes to remain anonymous?

Hi Ross. The best way is to act as his uploading "agent". If you can get reasonable looking permission to do the uploads, in an email from your friend (using a verifiable address) that explains that he is happy for you to upload any of his photos on the license chosen, then an OTRS volunteer can add a "ticket number" to any of the images that you later upload, which means that anyone can confirm that permission was granted if this is ever questioned. The original email can stay confidential, indeed there is no need for you or your friend to even use your real names on the public image pages if you prefer not to. w:Atlas (statue) was unveiled/published in 1937. If there was no copyright renewal within the 28 year window they would be public domain. Copyright of paints that I am the owner but not the painter?

If I am or I know owners of paints, photos, sculptures, carves, or any artistic may I publish photos of such of objects? (for those which I know the owner: we their verbal agreement) Are such of photos free of any rights? May I publish them on wikimedia commons without any restriction, free of any rights?

And what about photos of artistic sculptures, paints in the street, on the public domain?

As the owner of an artwork, you don't own the copyright to the artwork. To upload a contemporary artwork, you need the agreement of the artist, who retains all the property rights to their work. If you obtain the artists permission via the process at Commons:OTRS, you can upload it on their behalf. We don't accept any assurace of a verbal agreement with the artist, because it's not verifiable that they've given their permission.
If you are uploading a photo of a sculpture, both the sculpture and the photograph are copyrighted. It's OK to upload if you yourself are the photographer, but if you are uploading someone else's photos then you need the verifiable permission of the photographer (again, sent to OTRS).
Note that the copyrights on artworks of which the creator died before 1926 have usually expired (depending on the source country of the artwork), and are not relevant. I hope this answers your question –⁠moogsi (talk) 23:19, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

A photo with incorrect information

File:Hermannsburg (Natal).jpg is misidentified. It is not of the Hermannsburg in Natal, South Africa. It is in fact of a place with the same name in Northern Territory, Australia. The information on the sign in the photo (including the currency symbol - $) makes it perfectly obvious. This file needs to be renamed and its description and categorisation changed too. How in the world do you download photos from WikiMedia commons? Should be simplest thing in the world, but it's not..

I simply want to download a photo to my hard drive, but it just doesn't happen.

I go to a section of photos -- let's say the category of Lakes. I pick out a lake and click on "Download all sizes" to the right of the photo.

Up comes a window that says "Download this file". At the bottom it gives me an option on image size. I click on the size I want.

Up comes a beautiful copy of the photo in the size I requested. And absolutely no indication that there is any way to download this photo.

What's going on? What am I missing?

Once you have the image on you screen then 'right click' your mouse. Select "save picture as..." Make sure it is fully expanded in case it is shrunk to fit your screen. If the magnifying glass shows a '+' then click that for full size. Rembember where you saved it or Bill Gates will hide it deep in your computer. All files accepted by Commons (with the exception of Wikimedia logos and photographic reproductions of public domain works, where Wikimedia has elected to ignore local legislation) are free for commercial use with respect to copyright, including files published under a valid Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license. However, there is no pre-approval process for uploads, users often upload copyright violations with false copyright claims, and we don't catch all of them. Assessing that the copyright information provided is correct as well as accounting for non-copyright considerations such as trademark and personality rights is your responsibility. Use of CC BY 2.0 on the commons

I upload a derivative (invasive micropapillary carcinoma of the breast) of an image (siliconoma) on the commons. The original work was licenced under CC BY 2.0. The upload form doesn't let me choose that as a valid license. Is the original work in violation or should CC BY 2.0 be available as an option? Yes, you can choose any Commons-compatible license for files you upload. If the Upload Wizard isn't doing what you want, you have the alternative of Commons:Upload, which in some circumstances will direct you towards the old upload form, which allows you more freedom in what you can put on the page. CC-BY 2.0 should perhaps be an option in the Upload Wizard, it is still in development and some of the design goals are simplicity and usability compared to the other methods. It's difficult to give each CC tag we do allow as an option –⁠moogsi (talk) 21:44, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
The CC-BY-SA 2.0 license that you used is fine. A lot of free licenses are accepted on Commons. But for practical reasons only a small sample of those acceptable licenses are automatically included into the particular upload tool that is called the upload wizard. If you want to use an acceptable license that is not included in the sample of the UW, you can still use it, like Moogsi explained above. Also, note that when you make a "derivative work" (not in the copyright law meaning, but in the particular meaning attributed to that expression in the text of the CC licenses of the series 2.0, that is to say, basically when you make any modified version of the original work), the CC-BY-SA 2.0 license of the original work explicitely allows you the option to either offer the modified work under the same license as the original work or, if you so choose, to upgrade the "derivative work" to a later version of the license, that is to say, to relicense the modified work under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license instead of under a CC-BY-SA 2.0 license. Thus, technically, you could have offered the modified image under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. However, in the present case, given the particular nature of the original image (a juxtaposition of two images, which you separated) and given the nature of your modification, which does not generate a distinct copyrightable authorship, I think you made a good choice by choosing to offer the modified work under the same license as the original, CC-BY-SA 2.0. For conformity with the license, do not forget to describe in the description page the nature of the modification you made. Finally, if I may ask, why did you reduce the size of the modified image? Metadata of an image I just uploaded inadvertently reveals private information.

I have just uploaded File:Plastic laundry basket.jpg which, on the face of it, seems to be a completely harmless image - some might even call it boring. However, the image metadata contains the GPS coordinates of my home! That's not something I want to reveal to the entire Wikiverse. Can the metadata be redacted to remove it?

  • You can download to a computer, use the freely available 'exiftool' to remove any EXIF information you don't want in the image, and re-upload. Search only for featured images

Hello,

just now I wanted to execute some queries but limit the result set to "featured pictures" only. That turned out to be surprisingly hard to achieve. I found the advice of using "incategory:" not on Commons but on de:WP. It turned out not to work ("mysearchterm incategory:Featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons").

I think this type of advanced search should be supported by commons in a more intuitive way. Or did I overlook something? Many thanks for your answers in advance. --Wiki-observer (talk) 15:12, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Mediawiki's search functionality is woefully arcane, is not really well-suited for anything, and is particularly ill-suited for a media repository. However, the "incategory:" keyword is actually mentioned on the search page on Commons if you click on "View other tools". There is also a link to en:Help:Searching, which in turn links to en:Wikipedia:TCAT#Categorization using templates, which explains why your search doesn't work: Category:Featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons is populated using a template rather than by directly categorising the files. None of which actually helps you do what you want, I know. A Google search for something like

"your search term" "Featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons" site:commons.wikimedia.org intitle:File:

Why do you assume there were no copyrights on this photo? It was taken on March 19, 1943 at Rügenwalde. The German image agency Ullstein has it as image #00644023. Ullstein attributes the image to Walter Frentz who died in 2004. The image is copyrighted in Germany until the end of 2074 (barring future changes to the German copyright law :-) and thus not acceptable here. Lupo 13:58, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

There is no doubt that you're a registered user. Are you referring to the problem tag on File:Alligator Pond and the Fingernail Moon.jpg? That's not meant as an accusation. It's just that for previously published content, we need to verify that the copyright holder is really the one issuing the free license. Since anybody can register an account under any name, you'll need to follow the instructions of that notice and send an e-mail to our permission archive to confirm that you are you. Newly-arisen text scrolling issues

What's going on with text scrolling in edit windows? When I'm using my up and down arrows on the keyboard to scroll between lines, it always puts the cursor at the left end of the new line. I've never before noticed this in seven years of editing here, and it's greatly inconvenient. I'm using IE8 with Monobook in Windows 7. For an example of what I mean, look at File:Scrolling problem, Commons screenshot.png. In the past, if I put my cursor before "edit windows?" and hit the down arrow, it would always put the cursor before "new line", but it's suddenly started putting it at the new line, immediately before "puts the cursor". The change appears to have happened within the last few hours; I was working on images several hours this morning and early this afternoon (UTC) and wasn't witnessing anything unusual. This isn't a browser problem, since en:wp scrolling works fine. When I load a page here and place the cursor before the page has downloaded completely, it scrolls normally, but when the download finishes, it starts scrolling wrongly. I can't replicate this in IE10 (the only version I have access to right now). Perhaps you could try enabling or disabling the "Old edittools" gadget in your Preferences - that affects the behaviour of editboxes in some ways. A recent change which affects editboxes is the enabling of the mw:Translate extension on Commons, perhaps it's something to do with that. I know it's very unhelpful to say "don't use IE", but... don't use IE, or upgrade it to a version that works, if possible –⁠moogsi (talk) 11:21, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
Just a guess into the blue, try to disable IME of ULS, if you do not need it: First click the languages menu next to your user name, then Input (the option with the keyboard) and then the green button for deactivating it, then reload the page and try it again. Ok, then as the photographer, your classmate would be the creator of the photo (unless you personally arranged the angle of the shooting and adjusted all the setings, etc.). However, the copyright notice on the webpage, where the photo is published, specifies "Copyright © 2012 Elsie Allen High School. All rights reserved.", which seems to imply that the administration of Elsie Allen High School owns the copyright. Please ask your classmate and the school to sort out this situation between them. If it turns out that it is your classmate who owns the copyright, then she is the person who can offer a license, if she wants. In that case, please ask her if she wants to offer a free license and, if so, what free license. However, if it turns out that it is the school who owns the copyright of the photo, then the school is the entity that can offer a license. In that case, please ask the school administration if they want to offer a license and, if so, what license. In any case, we, here, are not allowed to add a license from our own initiative. The license can be offered by the copyright owner only. (If the copyright owner does not know what license to choose, some users may suggest the CC-by-sa 3.0 license.) Also, the copyright owner should either certify the license by sending an email through OTRS, or to mention the license on the school's webpage. Finally, who is Weiss? License/Copyright question File:Hana M Herodes a Herodias.jpg

I received notification that the file can be deleted because it doesn't have a "source" or copyright information.

The photo is one of many of my mother's aunt and was scanned from mother's family album. It is dated 1937 in the album and I have no way of verifying who actually took the picture as it was taken years before I was born and my parents are both deceased and I can't ask them.

My father was a photographer and the picture is dated from about the time he met mother so one could presume he is the author but that can't be verified. I have donated other unique photos of mother's aunt to the Slovak National Library archives but chose that one as representative of her work to publish, at mother's request, before she passed away.

At the time I posted the photo I was contacted by a Slovak administrator and explained this. The editor added “Hana Melickova, z osobnej zbierky Sula Vancova, (rod. Mitrovska)” (Hana Melickova, from personal collection of Sula Vancova, (nee Mitrovska)) to clarify the source.

I would appreciate any help as to how to license it as this is the only “representative” picture of her that I have and would hate to have it being deleted just because I can't verify if father actually took the it. --Mvanco (talk) 14:03, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

As source you can state that it is your own collection. But it's more instresting when it was first published. Cause we have severel gudlines and it is eventually PD:
But if you are pretty sure that your grandfather is the photographer and copyright holder you and all the ancetors of your grandfather have to agree to publish it under a free license which you can choose from here. I would advise you to choose {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}. The best would be also then afterwards to send an E-Mail with all the agreements of your ancestors to the OTRS-Team. Hi, I don't think we can host this file unless you know that it was published before 1926. I am assuming this is a previously unpublished picture taken in Czechoslovakia in 1937 by an unknown author, in which case we cannot host it at Commons. There are a few of things you can do:

  • If there are any pictures you do know the authorship of, then you can use one of those. For example, pictures that you know were taken by your grandfather, which his heirs own the rights to, can be released by the heirs at Commons using {{PD-heirs}}. You can do this with the pictures you donated to the Slovak National Library, as the heirs of the photographer still own the copyright.
  • A photo of her anonymously published more than 70 years ago would be eligible for upload at Slovak Wikipedia (if Slovak Wikipedia allows local uploads, Czech Wikipedia doesn't)
  • You can upload the picture as fair use at wikis which allow such uploads. This means that the copyright status can be ignored for illustrative purposes, as long as no other free pictures of the subject exist. (A partial list of Wikimedia projects which allow fair use is at meta:Non-free content, again, cs.wiki does not, I do not know about sk.wiki)
  • Boldly assume that your grandfather is the author, and use {{PD-heirs}} on the photo, as above. However, I would not recommend this as Commons operates on a precautionary principle when it comes to copyrighted works.

There are options other than {{PD-heirs}} if you are uploading an old photo and you wish to retain the copyright for some reason, but judging by what you are saying I don't think you intend to do this. You can't use {{PD-EU-no author disclosure}}, as that is for works published in the EU more than 70 years ago. It seems as though this photo has not been published before.

Correction: It was not my grandfather - My father was a photographer. I can't go on trying to prove that I have the right to publish OLD photos from the family album. I can't AFFIRM that my father took the picture. The date (1937) would indicate so but I can't be 100% sure and I don't want to play the game by posting that he was the photographer (It was taken before I was born.) I have written to the sk.wiki administrator that originally OK'd the posting asking if it can be uploaded there rather than to the Commons. By the Way, the photo was most PROBABLY published in 1937 as my grand-aunt is in full dress and makeup for the part she was playing then. To the best of my knowledge I changed the copyright to show only *{{PD-EU-no author disclosure}}. Reasoning for this is as I explained before:

  1. The photo is dated 1937 in my mother's album.
  2. It shows her aunt in full theater dress and make up.
  3. It appears to be a “posed” picture, most likely used for publicity of her role.
  4. If the picture was indeed used for publicity in 1937, which I presume it was, I would think this constitutes “being published”.
  5. Being that we are in 2013 that makes the photo 76 years old.

Considering the above factors, in my view the picture therefore qualifies for *{{PD-EU-no author disclosure}}

The new version of the picture is shown in the history section of the File page of the picture BUT NOT on the File list page where all my uploads are displayed! Typically, at events, openings, galas, etc., people meet the press in front of a promotional backdrop with event name or sponsor name plastered all over. I see why we don't want promo on Wikipedia or Commons images. But, if the image is cropped so that the person nearly completely fills the frame, so that only fractions of the event organizer's name are visible, what'e the threshold of that's-still-promo? My example is File:NewFront speaker Jenna Rose.jpg, which I just got the copyright holder (Digita) to release under CC-BY-2.0 on Flickr. --Lexein (talk) 11:51, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Uploaded image not displaying

Adding a school's logo to its Wiki page

I am the president of the Antelope Valley High School Alumni Association and I would like to add our school's logo to its wiki page. The logo is freely used for all school functions and I have the school's backing to do this.   • "freely used" is not a legal category in copyright law. You need to sort out its copyright status. This is presumably U.S. Do you know when the logo dates from? - Jmabel ! talk 15:04, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
  • The article is at the English Wikipedia. You could upload it just to the English Wikipedia, with a fair use rationale, and then it could be used in that article. Look at en:File:TempleOwls.png or other schools' logos as examples of what to do. In other cases, if the logo is relatively simple, then it may not be copyrighted. The File:Best Western logo.svg, for example, is (just barely) too simple to be copyrighted. In that case, you may freely upload it to Commons. WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:26, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Author email notification

An author of photos wishes to be notified of which images of his are being used on which article. He'd like to be directly contacted via email. I was going to put a notice in the Permissions section of {{Information}} to the likes of "This file is licensed cc-by 2.0. Please notify the author of any uses at _____[email]". I've seen other photographers have a nice request like this, but only in passing and now I can't find any. Multi-language notes

I wonder if there is way to use multi-language notes. I often use the note tool to describe important buildings on panoramic views, e.g. here: File:Muelheim-Teilpanorama-von-Styrumer-Bruecke-Nordosten-2013.jpg - unfortunately the notes and only in German (and with links to de-WP). It would be useful to add notes in multiple languages in a way that an annotated image could be used in the English and German WP for example. Any ideas? --Tuxyso (talk) 12:11, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Image notes support wikitext just as normal pages, you can use {{De}} for german description and {{En}} for english. See File:Finnish civil guard weapons.JPG. MKFI (talk) 12:24, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
OK, it works that way, but from user's perspective not very handy. The problem is that all texts from different languages are shown. If one uses the language codes in the file description only up to three languages are shown. When there are more than three language entries only one entry is shown (in the system language). {{LangSwitch}} works. See e.g. the notes on File:Spelterini Blüemlisalp.jpg. The notes are displayed in the user's language (default English). Try watching that page using different settings for the "uselang" URL parameter (e.g., de, fr, dsb). Lupo 14:40, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Usually not. I can't remember the reason, however. Maybe because the descriptions are often of unequal extent and perhaps also because anonymous users may not set their user interface language. Reproductions of visual art?

What's the policy on photographic reproduction of visual art? In particular, I'm interested in contributing photographs of paintings by early-20th century German painters so that they can be used on their wikipedia pages. Is this permissible? One painter I'm thinking of (Ernst Ludwig Kirchner) has been dead for over 70 years, and the other (Otto Dix) has not, if that makes any difference. Any information you can offer will be appreciated! Redirect to wikipedia

Is it possible to redirect my user/talk pages to Wikipedia? I dont often come on here so dont want to miss anything that may pop up. There are no cross-project automatic redirects (the closest you'll get is {{SOFTREDIRECT}}). You shouldn't discourage use of your talk page here, because it doesn't make much sense to expect Commons users to go to a different project for communication about Commons-related matters, and our standard notification templates also don't work on other projects. You'll notice in the link you posted that the photographer wrote "I would be very happy to be informed" in the permission/reuse section, which itself is a link to his talk page. Auf meiner Benutzerseite wurde moniert, dass zum Bild von Lüdke keine License angegeben ist. Das Foto Friedrich Germanus Lüdke hat mein Großvater, der 1937 verstorben ist, entweder selbst gemacht oder fertigen lassen. Die Vorlage ist mir nicht bekannt. Ich bitte höflich um Hilfe, wenn ich die Beschreibung ergänzen soll. Abschließend habe ich in diesem Zusammenhang noch eine Frage: Aus dem kostenlosen E-book von google books habe ich das Bild von Johann Weinlob bei Wikimedia unter Weinleben_Seidel eingestellt. Soweit ich erkennen kann, wurde dieses Problem von einem anderen User am 28. März behoben, diff ist: [5]. Die automatische Meldung des Bots stammt vom 26. März und kann m.E. ignoriert werden. In der Bild-Info wird jetzt PD-art mit PD-old-100 als Lizenz-Tag verwendet, eine der gebräuchlichsten Tags für solche alten Bilder. GermanJoe (talk) 14:03, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

Unless you are an admin, you can't delete it yourself, but if it is a recent upload and not currently used, you can request a speedy upload and it will be done. Tag it with {{Speedydelete|1=uploader request, recent upload, not used}}. If it is not a recent upload or if it is currently used, you'd have to nominate it for deletion just like anyone else would. - Jmabel ! talk 14:54, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

Montenegrin Coat of Arms ERROR

Hello,

There exist a problem with the Coat of Arms of Montenegro which is currently uploaded on Wikipedia: it is fake! (this one: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/23/Coat_of_arms_of_Montenegro.svg )

The Original Coat of Arms does NOT have red claws or red&white jewels on the crown, but yellow/golden! Also, the fake one has weird eyes on the eagle and lion. (Originals available at the website of the Government of Montenegro http://www.gov.me/ResourceManager/FileDownload.aspx?rId=41002&rType=1 , or Parliament of Montenegro http://skupstina.me/images/sadrzaj/grb.jpg )

I urge if someone can replace present image on Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Coat_of_arms_of_Montenegro.svg ) with this one http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/2/23/20101011001031!Coat_of_arms_of_Montenegro.svg , because it is most accurate one. This file was uploaded before, but someone has replaced it with the wrong one.

Regular deletion discussions typically stay open for a week. If you can show that something is an obvious copyright violation, you should tag them for speedy deletion using {{Copyvio}} rather than bringing them up for discussion. Copyright violators are typically only blocked if they continue to upload copyright violations in spite of multiple warnings, and then typically only for a few days initially. Picture wasn't updated

Hi, I have updated this picture successfully. The thumbnail is OK, but the full size picture is still old. I reloaded the page, picture, use [Ctrl]+[F5], but I still see the old one. However, I uploaded it again and there is the same problem, but the previous picture is now OK!

Can somebody fix it?

It is the scheme of the metro and the change is on the end of the blue line. The part Marymont-Mlociny should be dark like other stations.

Could elaborate a bit on what it is you want to do? The types of pages we have for celebrities here on Wikimedia Commons are typically gallery pages and category pages – for showcasing and organising images and other media files, respectively. If what you have in mind is an encyclopædia article, you're on the wrong project, and you're probably looking for en:Wikipedia:Starting an article over at the English Wikipedia project. Steve Adey image upload

First of all, links make things a bit easier. You're talking about File:Steve64.jpg, en:Steve Adey and en:Steve Adey discography. Regarding the photo itself, you're claiming that it's your own work and that you are the copyright holder, while the file's metadata contains "© 2010 Philippe Monthoux". Are you Philippe Monthoux?
Your actual question is more of a Wikipedia editing issue than an issue with Commons, but it seems to be that in this edit, you changed the image parameter in the Infobox musical artist template to Image with an upper-case I. Template parameters are case-sensitive. Change it back to a lower-case i, and it should work. —LX (talk, contribs) 11:55, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Images from Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology

We have a series of images relating to the museum collections that are out of copyright and in the museum photography collections that would be great to add to Wikimedia. How do I go about sorting this out? Is there anything special I need to do - I've looked through the FAQs and can't see anything that would help me. What appears to be the actual stumbling block? Is the issue identifying the right template for describing why the images are in the public domain? There's a long list at Commons:Copyright tags. It's important to note that the images must be in the public domain both in the source country (presumably the UK) and in the US. To help you further, we'd need to know more (such as when and where the first publication occurred and/or when the author died). Or is the issue how to upload a large number of files?
