Upload all images or exlude ones of little educational value?[edit]

I would like to upload images from https://www.duma72.ru, which is the website of the Tyumen Oblast Duma. (Copyright shouln't be a problem since it's under a free license.) I'm wondering if it's a good idea to upload every single image from this site, which would be easier, or if it's better to exclude ones that I consider to be of little educational value like these ones: https://www.duma72.ru/ru/arena/media/photo/2412/. Is uploading of such images even allowed or would this violate the depicted persons' personality rights? D3rT!m (talk) 11:41, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dear @D3rT!m, this is now just a personal assessment but I'd only try to upload what I consider to be of a potential educational value. What I deem to have little educational value I'd not want to upload. I have checked some of the pages and at least here, they have twice the same image. I believe here then you could only opt to upload one each.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 13:38, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Kindly keep my artworks[edit]

Hi

Greetings, my name is R. Gopakumar The following images are my own artworks that I uploaded. They will be deleted soon. I would appreciate it if you could resolve this issue. My own works and images are shown below. The username I use is "Editani". I uploaded these images because I need to create a gallery on my Wikipedia it version https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gopakumar_R.

@Editani: As far as Commons is concerned, I agree with Jeff, but it looks like you are violating it:Wikipedia:Conflitto di interessi. It's not my role here to enforce the rules of the Italian Wikipedia, but I suggest you try to get in line with that rule or you are likely to have your account there blocked. - Jmabel ! talk 06:48, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Editani Besides the COI declaration, mandatory on it.wiki (see it:WP:CSC), the source for some files, e.g. R-Gopakumar-Mind-Scape.jpg is a website published with not free license. This is no compliant with Commons' guidelines. Ruthven (msg) 15:50, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Kindly fix this issue. It was the same issue for my following image, then that fixed. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Linguistics_River.jpg

Uploading a new version of File:Wikimania - The Wikimentary.webm[edit]

Hello, Recently, I have uploaded File:Wikimania - The Wikimentary - Edited.webm, a cropped-down version of File:Wikimania - the Wikimentary.webm. But actually, perhaps I should've just updated the latter rather than creating a new file... My project being that the former replaces the latter everywhere it is used.

The problem with File:Wikimania - the Wikimentary.webm, as you can see if you watch the video, is that it starts over regularly to the beginning - so the visionner of the video has to speed up to where it cut off last in order to enjoy the full length. The full video, no interruption, thus begins at 25'40 . My edit aims to show only the useful length (so starting at 25'40 ) .

If I were to update directly File:Wikimania - the Wikimentary.webm, I would edit again my own edit: right now, i repet several times that my edit shortens the original publication, and that I do not own the credit, blah, blah... Looking back, on it, it's not so necessary.

What do you think? Can I Overwrite the current video, File:Wikimania - the Wikimentary.webm ? Thank you for your advice,
Blocktomo (talk) 21:25, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Blocktomo: I tagged this file with {{Allow Overwriting}} for you.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 06:02, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Now, I can't upload a decent new version because I'm limited to 100 mb... Blocktomo (talk) 16:17, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Blocktomo: Try with User talk:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js. Yann (talk) 16:37, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wow thanks! I'll post an update when I do it. Blocktomo (talk) 10:19, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, done! thank you @Jeff G. and @Yann !
I had however read somewhere that only auto-patrol members were aloud to use bigChunkedUploads ... Have I been breaking the rules? I mean, I believe my edit was useful, so I'm glad I did it, but it's worth asking, as that can help me better understand the conventions of Wikimedia Commons. Blocktomo (talk) 11:39, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Blocktomo: You're welcome. Autopatrol is not mentioned on that page or on Help:Chunked upload. It goes without saying that only users confident in adding to their js files may do so.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 01:40, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Err... what kind of dangers can adding bigChunkedUpload to my js files pose to my computer? Or do you mean, "confident in finding where the js files actually are"? Blocktomo (talk) 20:24, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Blocktomo: Running someone else's code carries inherent risks. OTOH, I've been using this code for years, without incidents due to this code (the servers have occasionally had problems with my uploads that I have reported in phab:).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 08:14, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But no risk can be hidden, right? I mean, the "virus" would a part of the code? A skilled programmer (such as not myself) could detect it in the code?

Broken link to National Park Service File - Can I upload a copy to Wikimedia Commons?[edit]

aANew York State hosted online a 30 page PDF copy of an OMB 1024-0018 NPS (National Park Service) form documenting a historic church in Saratoga County that was linked by the Wikipedia article on the church stood. 9 photos included in the PDF are also linked. The old links to a New York State website no longer function and the document isn't found on the Wayback machine. Searching I found a reference to the document the National Park Service website as "The PDF file for this National Register record has not yet been digitized.". I downloaded a copy of the PDF from the NY webpages prior to it the link being broken. The church was torn down not long after being put on the register of historic places. The PDF has 9 photos documenting the structure.

UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR 0MB NO. 1024-0018, NPS FORM NATIONAL PARK SERVICE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES REGISTRATION FORM

My question is can I upload the PDF to Wikimedia commons? Could the photos be copied out of the document and used to illustrate the Wikipedia page? Thanks. HareHereHare (talk) 23:59, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@HareHereHare: Hi, and welcome. Who filled out the form and added the photos?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:09, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Signed by a Deputy Commissioner for Historic Preservation, and a "signature of Keeper". The form was prepared by a Program Analyst with NYS OPRHP DHP Field Seryices.
The form is stamped in a number of places as "RECEIVED 413 DEC 12 1994 INTERAGENCY RESOURCES DIVISION NATIONAL PARK SERVICE" HareHereHare (talk) 00:19, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The photographs include scans of the reverse that show the name of the photographer (the NYS OPRHP DHP Field Services analyst) and location of the negatives (NYS OPRHP DHP Field Services). HareHereHare (talk) 00:26, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Noodling around the NPS website I found a copyright disclaimer on an asset they actually have linked: "Copyright Information:
Permission must be secured from the individual copyright owners to reproduce any copyrighted materials contained within this website." HareHereHare (talk) 00:47, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@HareHereHare: Thanks, so we need the NYS OPRHP DHP Field Services analyst to send permission via VRT, either with the PDF file or with a link to it, preferably with a carbon copy to you.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 01:45, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Photo of ancestor[edit]

I have a photo of George McDermot, taken in about 1900, that was sent to me by the Paulist order in New York, where he was a priest. I would like to use the photo on the Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_McDermot, which I created. When asked (by George McDermot's great-great nephew) for any information they had about him, the Paulists just sent the photo and said he could have it. Is this sufficient for copyright purposes, and if so what licence is appropriate?

Many thanks in advance. I have tried to find a similar case in the FAQ for image uploading, but cannot see one.

Regards John Gallagher Jpg496 (talk) 14:50, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You say it is from "about 1900". There are certain circumstances under which a U.S. photo from that date could still be copyrighted, but it would be unusual. If it's from before 1904 and has never been published, or if it was first published in 2003 or later, then {{PD-US-unpublished}} works. If it was published in 1928 or earlier, {{PD-US-expired}} works. If it was first published in between those dates (1929-2002, inclusive) things can get trickier, and it just might still be copyrighted. Do you know which of these cases applies? - Jmabel ! talk 15:43, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick reply. As far as I know the full photo itself has not been published, though a similar photo (cropped) appears on George McDermot's entry on https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/95846462/george-mcdermott. This was created by the Paulists (who gave us the photo) in 2012. Jpg496 (talk) 16:07, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Any publication in 2003 or later is not a problem, because starting then publication of old unpublished works did not extend their U.S. copyright, so you can use .{{PD-US-unpublished}} if it is from before 1904 (120 years). - Jmabel ! talk 21:33, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Jpg496 (talk) 07:41, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

PDF/Vorschau JPG-Auflösung[edit]

Hallo,

Es geht um folgende Datei: file:Список дворян Киевской губернии, 1906 г.pdf. Danke für jede Hilfe. Angel Miklashevsky (talk) 15:58, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ansonsten siehe mein Vorredner :-) Windharp (talk) 09:54, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading a SVG with an embedded public domain true type font, that I made myself???[edit]

So, I’ve been working on the image referenced in this post Commons talk:Overwriting existing files/Requests#c-Asclepias-20240224141300-Linux dr-20240224000500 which ended up here:

File:English pattern playing cards deck PLUS CC0.svg

and realized the text really SHOULD be embedded so it can be edited/translated/searched, etc. and went through a week long escapade creating a font, realizing SVG Fonts are obsolete, converting to TTF, figuring out how to embed that in an SVG, and use it within InkScape… replaced all path text with text objects (or clones there of) so it’s “easy” to edit or translate… it was such a pain in the butt that I wrote a monster change log message to upload the file:

TL;DR: This should be visually identical to previous versions, but changed “SVG Path text” to “Embedded SVG text objects” and embedded all characters used into a custom (still CC0) embedded TrueTypeFont

This turned out to be a ‘much more ambitious’ change than I realized. Rest assured, the rendered artwork should be indistinguishable from the original. I was combing through the MetaData trying to finalize it and realized that all the included characters were “SVG Path text”, and I noticed Inkscape included a “SVG Font Editor” tool (that I didn’t realize was obsolete. (Excluding suites that I hadn’t considered yet), the file included 10 digits, AJQK for Ace, Jack, Queen and King, plus OER to complete the word “Joker”… Realizing any font without a complete latin alphabet would be useless I added the remaining 19 capital letters for a total of 36 characters. Then I realized that SVG fonts had been removed from the SVG 2.0 candidate spec in 2016 and were legacy in the few places they were supported. Making a long story… umm less long, I used FontForge to convert these to TrueType Fonts, I also decided to add the 4 card suite characters for use ‘all over’ the cards. (I contemplated, and after research, dismissed the idea of including Tarrot card suit symbols also.) This gave me a font with 40 real characters, space, and a “unmatched character” I was able to manually include this into the SVG file with a text editor but Inkscape was unable to use it. So I installed it into the system as a font, but with the limited character set Inkscape still refused to let me use it. To allow me to edit the image in Inkscape, I took another public domain font (Tuffy @ Fonts 4 Free) and grafted in my 40 characters after scaling the font accordingly. This finally allowed me to edit the SVG file in InkScape with the 21 of my 40 custom characters I was using. I finally then propagated all the path text characters in the image and to text objects (or clones of text objects, then integrated them into each card one by one. After all this, I went back in with my text editor and included my 40 character TTF font in a <style> tag as a base64 binary blob, and replaced all references to “Tuffy” with my custom font name: “Cc0PlayingCardTypeStaresque”… TypeStarEsque is a reference to the closest font I found with WhatTheFont which was called FF TypeStar. It’s significantly different, so I’m sure there is not copyright violation, but it’s close enough that “TypeStarEsque” seemed at least descriptive. I haven’t finished updating all the metadata yet, but now I can claim, accurately that all text characters are embedded text that can be edited for localization purposes, and since the custom font is included, it should render the same everywhere. The vertical text rendering of “JOKER” I wanted to include as a font setting, but it turns out that vertical text isn’t officially supported in SVG until SVG 2.0 that has yet to be ratified, so I just used a multiline string with newline chars between each line (less cool, maybe, but more universally compatible.)

If you actually read this far, you must be a masochist like me.

I uploaded the file and get these errors:

If you do not provide suitable license and source information, your upload will be deleted without further notice. Thank you for your understanding.

Found unsafe CSS in the style element of uploaded SVG file.

NOW WHAT??? Linux dr (talk) 22:59, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Since there I tried posting the TrueTypeFont by itself on Wikimedia Commons, that for some reason doesn't support TTF files... so then I tried to get the font hosted externally, and posted it here: https://www.fontspace.com/get/family/jd83w, and had my newest version of the SVG file reference the external URL, and got the same error. (that was a bit of a long shot.) any other ideas? Linux dr (talk) 01:58, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In SVG on Commons (or any WMF project) you can only use Fonts (ttf or other format) that are installed in the MW software as webfonts. The number of webfonts of MW is very limited, they are basically only there to ensure that every Unicode codepoint can be displayed on any device that is used to display MW pages. Therefore it is unlikely, that another font will be added. But you can try to lobby for your font to be added to the available webfonts of MW. For first is needs to be free and for second it will need to offer a benefit in providing WMF's mission to bring free knowledge and education to all the world. I do not know is there is a process for adding webfonts, but probably you would start a feature request at Phab:. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 09:42, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If this is the case, this is simply my misunderstanding WMF’s attitude/policy toward fonts, [edit: and/or path text ] etc… The only thing “special” about the font in question, is that it came from the SVG image I was working on. (Imagine extracting the font from https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campbell's_Soup_Cans to reconstruct it as a “searchable” SVG with the original font.) Perhaps a standard annotation for pointing out path text already in an image would make more sense. I remember seeing a recommendation somewhere that “path text” be accompanied by embedded text that is 100% transparent. Has this been standardized anywhere? Would this make more sense? Thanks again for your quick response. Linux dr (talk) 19:44, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube Video Screenshot[edit]

Hello - New user here!

Am I allowed to upload a screenshot from a YouTube video to the Wikimedia Commons? Or is this against the TOS/Copyright Laws?

Thank you! Cheeseburgahhh (talk) 23:05, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Only if the video is licensed under Creative Commons license and the creator holds the rights to the content Trade (talk) 01:05, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Or if the video is under some other compatible licence. Or is of a work whose copyright has expired, or is a work by the US government, or.... Uploading a photo[edit]

It's very similar to this photo. It's a buidling that shows a South Korean branch of a Japanese Shinto-based new religion on the 3rd floor. Unlike the previously-mentioned image, my photo doesn't have any faces of people and license plants of automobiles, but there are phone numbers of businesses. Is it still OK to upload this image? Komitsuki (talk) 13:49, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

And also there are tiny logos for businesses in the photo. So, I don't think the photo I took would be Creative Commons when it comes to the license. Komitsuki (talk) 13:59, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Without seeing the photo, really all anyone can say is "probably OK". If the logos are de minimis, it will be fine. - Jmabel ! talk 17:27, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll post the photo I took here and I'll delete this photo in 2 days. Here is the link. I don't know how to do photoshop to make the image appropriate for Wikimedia Commons. Komitsuki (talk) 17:40, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see anything about the image that is at all obviously inappropriate for Wikimedia Commons. I really don't see what you are concerned about. There is a male symbol as well as a neutered male symbol available in ASCII characters. there is also a female symbol, but i cannot find a neutered female symbol. The female symbol is a circle mounted on a cross. I am trying to find a suitable NEUTERED FEMALE symbol for use in veterinary records. I imagine this might have a cross in the circle or a second line through the cross below the circle (rather like the neutered male symbol). Does anyone have any idea where i can find (or make) this combination, ideally as an asciii symbol. Tim Harris <redacted> 24.114.81.197 13:53, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am not aware of a single Gender Symbol in ASCII. There are however many Gender Symbols in Unicode (and I do not know, why you would use ASCII instead of Unicode?). You will find selections of Gender Symbols at https://nonbinary.wiki/wiki/Gender_symbols or at https://unicode.org/charts/nameslist/n_2600.html. You will find more at the Unicode site. However you should only use symbols from Unicode (and not from the private use areas of Unicode) for best interoperability. You can create more Gender Symbols with the Unicode combining marks, that allow to combine two or more Unicode codepoints into a single Glyph. I regret I am no expert on the subject, but just sharing my general knowledge and brief research. I’ve been a life-long dog owner, and never heard of a “neutered female”. The term I always heard was “spaid female”. A brief amount of research turned up
that many vets tattoo spaid/neutered dogs and cats. Traditionally this is supposedly a green or blue line at or near the incision site, and is most common when the surgery is performed in shelters. Its most noted benefit is to prevent the need for later exploratory surgeries. I have seen photos of some dogs tattooed with more elaborate spay or neuter symbol which is (based on the photos) the male or female symbol “struck through” the middle of the circles, and perpendicular to the arrow or plus in males or females. I have no idea WHY such elaborate tattoos were created, but they sound like they may be the symbology you’re looking for.

Can't upload a new version of an svg file[edit]

I made my own modifications to File:Emblem of Yemen.svg, and I just can't proceed,

  • It prompts me that "If you do not provide suitable license and source information, your upload will be deleted without further notice. Thank you for your understanding." I modified the file myself.
  • It also prompts me that "Found scriptable element "script" in the uploaded SVG file." which I tried to remove by modifying the .svg file but the message didn't go away regardless.

Are religious symbols/logos copyrighted?[edit]

Apologies for this ridiculous question. Just asking a question about this because I uploaded a photo with the symbol/logo of a Japanese religious establishment, Zenrinkyo, in a very tiny part of it. It looks like a Christian cross surrounded by a flower. I have extra photos for the plaques of the symbol/logo and I want to upload them if they are permitted. Because it's difficult for me to search for the answer, what is Wikimedia Commons' policy on photos that have religious logos/symbol? Komitsuki (talk) 15:52, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a little bit concerned as I imposed the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication to that photo. Komitsuki (talk) 16:24, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Komitsuki: it's de minimis in the photograph so it's fine. To answer your larger question, yes, religious logos and symbols can be copyrighted, but they would have to be above the threshold of originality in the country of origin to be copyrightable. Proper use of images of executives[edit]

I'm looking to add headshots/images for different companies. Doing so seems like a good way to enhance different pages.

That said, I'd like clarity on proper usage. Take Satya Nadella's page, for instance. The image appears to be from a professional photographer, but it's listed under a Creative Commons license (CC BY-SA 4.0). How can you be sure you have permission? Was this given in a way that isn't obvious to anyone but this inside Wikipedia?

On a related note, if you were able to take an image from a firm's site and source it to that site in a clear, obvious way, would that be OK?

More clarification on image use[edit]

Here's a better example of what's prompting me to ask these questions.

I looked at the page for the CEO of Reddit, Steve Huffman. It has an image and the sourcing is clear. It takes you to a flickr account. But how is permission established? It has a CC label, but where does it say that on the flickr site?

If you find an image on a site that makes the source obvious and then use it - taking the image of Ford CEO Jim Farley from the company site, and clearly marking the source as Ford, for instance - does that work?

https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/people/james-d--farley--jr-.html#

@KjOKheyhey On the Flickr page for the file, https://flickr.com/photos/74711243@N06/38232183112, there's a link below the picture on the right-hand side that says "Some rights reserved". That's a link to the CC BY 2.0 licence and is what marks the picture as having been released under that licence. You might find Commons:Where is the license on various sites? useful. Your Ford example doesn't seem to have a free licence, so wouldn't be acceptable on Commons. --bjh21 (talk) 20:39, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading photos which appear as rotated[edit]

I'm in the process of uploading more than 20 images, scanned from negatives, and a few of them have uploaded rotated (either upside down, or rotated through 90 degrees). Can I fix this at this stage (without having to re-enter all of the descriptions) or should I delete the rotated ones and try to upload them later? Ginigee (talk) 21:05, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ginigee: Once you've finished uploading them, there's an option on each file's page (under the list of versions of the file) to "Upload a new version of this file". You can use that to overwrite the file while keeping the description intact. Commons has recently instituted some restrictions on overwriting files, but I don;'t think there's any problem with overwriting files you've uploaded yourself. --bjh21 (talk) 21:31, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User created "gallery" of ogg files[edit]

Would somebody be willing to look at a "gallery" of ogg files and see if Commons would like to host it? On other wikis I create a page by doing a search and hitting the return button. My guess is that on Commons we write the page in userspace and request a page move. That is fine with me, but I am currently writing a "gallery" of ogg files, and don't know if I should write it for Commons, Wikipedia, or Wikiversity. Where it should go depends in how I write it (especially because Wikiversity and Wikipedia have different template structures.) The gallery is a full performance of Mozart's Magic Flute. To my (questionable) ear, the performance ogg file seem pretty good. A version of the "gallery" is under construction at w:User:Guy vandegrift/sandbox/sandbox. Guy vandegrift (talk) 17:55, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, there is a reasonable chance this gallery would get visits. I make lots of image files, but over 50 have been placed on wikis other that Wikiversity. See v:User:Guy vandegrift/Images on other wikis--Guy vandegrift (talk) 18:51, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Actress Mia Marvin[edit]

Miss Marvin's Wikipedia entry has no photo of her and there are none available exhaustively searching the Internet. Is there a way to get authorization from the owner the film "The Public Enemy" by Warner Bros. 1931 (ranked #8 on AFI's top 10 gangster films) to use a screenshot from the movie? I successfully had her added to the IMDB database some years back to be included as an uncredited actor in the film. How do you create a new category?[edit]

Commons:Categories#Creating a new category says to just search for it, and when it isn't found some red lettered item will show up and to just click on it to create it. I searched for Category: 1876 paintings by Auguste Toulmouche, and all I got was a box that said

We didn't find any results Try more general terms or check your spelling

I know you didn't find it; that's why I'm trying to create it. (I deleted what I meant to include about what I think). How do I create a new category?Mabrndt (talk) 03:56, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I usually do it one of two ways:
1) If there is an item I want to add to the category, just add the category to the item which creates a red link you can click on.
2) Edit a similiar category, and change the URL to the new category name which then opens the edit window of the new category. This has the advantage that you can easily copy & paste the content from the existing category to the new one. Windharp (talk) 09:47, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I know, 1) no longer works (at least I couldn't get/see any red link to click on). But, 2) did work and I was able to create the category. Thanks!!Mabrndt (talk) 14:33, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mabrndt: It still works, see for example Category:Graffiti_in_Landkreis_Reutlingen which has a red category between all the blue ones. Works the same with pictures, that was just the first example I found :-) Windharp (talk) 15:57, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I wasn't specific enough. I meant searching (for me anyway) didn't return anything red to click on; the next reply probably explains why.
@Mabrndt: After searching, use "Switch to Special:Search" in the top right (on desktop). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:10, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Experienced editor[edit]

Hello

I'm trying to translate a page to another language, but I have to create another language first. I can create a language and translate it but I can't press OK to continue. When I press OK I get an error message that I am not an experienced editor.

My question now is: How do you become an experienced editor so you can publish the translations?

Thanks in advance, I look forward to an answer. Ben Kenens Promocioeconomicalajonquera (talk) 09:00, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Promocioeconomicalajonquera: Could you please be more specific than "a page" and "another language"? And certainly you don't mean "create a language" (I think you mean create a page in a language, but I'm not sure). I suspect the "my question now" question is based on a misunderstanding. Photo Credit[edit]

Can I upload a photo to be used on wikipedia and require that all uses provide a photo credit? Eyetosee (talk) 17:17, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Eyetosee: Meaning you want to be explicitly credited in Wikipedia, rather than just having the photo link to the file page? If so, no. - Jmabel ! talk 17:27, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, a CC-by-sa licence would do that. See COMMONS:LICENSING and https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/
However do you mean 'a photo credit' broadly, or (as Jmabel describes) a credit on the Wikipedia page ? In which case, no. Andy Dingley (talk) 17:55, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I mean, whenever or where ever the image gets used a credit is given. Eyetosee (talk) 22:23, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Again: no, it is not possible to require that an actual written credit be given on the pages where it is used, and in particular this will not happen in Wikipedia.
If you license with {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} then that requires that to conform there must be a credit in some form, but for online use it is permitted to have a situation where the user has to click on the picture to see the credit (and that is what will be done in Wikipedia). If that is not acceptable to you, then please do not upload your files to Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 10:22, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mbarrach: Convenience links (please use internal links, which work correctly for both PC and mobile/tablet, and which will show in red if the page in question does not exist; in edit mode, note the colon after the initial square brackets, which says I am mentioning the category of file, not applying the category to the present page, or displaying the file on the present page): Category:Alan E. Freedman, File:1923 Fox Folks Lab History 1.jpg, File:1923 Fox Folks Lab History 20.jpg.
I am not sure I understand your question. You seem to be asking how to put all 20 of these pages in Category:Alan E. Freedman, which seems an odd thing to do. Surely if we have 20+ pages for Fox Folks it deserves a category of its own.
Have you read Commons:Categories? If not, you should at least skim it.
To add category "A" to an image "B" (or as a parent to a child category "B") you just edit the page for "B" and at the bottom (near other categories if they are already there) add the category (in this case [[Category:Alan E. Freedman]] if that is the category you mean to add).
I hope that answers your question. - Jmabel ! talk 10:34, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

Does anyone know what is the exact category for this type of shark? I'm not very knowledgeable in this field.

Other deletion reasoning for image[edit]

An image that I had uploaded has been tagged for copyright. I don't think the copyright violation is valid, however after some consideration, I do think the image I had uploaded is non-educational, and is thus OOS. I believe that the image should be deleted, but not for copyright reasons. What should I do, if anything? Thanks, WhoAteMyButter (talk) 06:02, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@WhoAteMyButter: If it's on its way to deletion anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about the grounds. Or, if it's something you uploaded in the last 7 days, you can speed things along by replacing the current rationale with {{SD|G7}}, as explained at Template:My bad upload. - Jmabel ! talk 10:38, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@WhoAteMyButter: You can remove the coyvio tag and start a normal deletion request explaining why the file is not a copyvio and why you think it is out of scope. On the description page of the file, below the scary red copyvio tag, there is a button labeled "challenge speedy deletion". You can click it. Or alternatively, you can click the "nominate for deletion" link in the "tools" column. If the whole thing is indeed CC-BY 4.0, screen captures are probably fine. Files are automatically considered in scope if they are in use in Wikipedia. The user who nominated for copyvio the file mentioned on your talk page nominated also another file without warning you on your talk page. It's the file still in use in your draft. If you want to keep it, you must act quickly to challenge the speedy deletion. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:08, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

JPG preview of TIF files?[edit]

All TIF files like this one have JPG previews of multiple resolutions up to the maximum pixels of the original file. The example I am using also has a JPG version as a separate file as well but it is a scaled down version.

Is it safe to assume that the largest JPG preview of the TIF file has as good or even better quality to if I convert the TIF file to JPG in a converter? StellarHalo (talk) 10:07, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No. If you use a converter, it is your choice to set the jpeg-quality to any value you want from 0 to 100%. The Wiki preview comes with a jpeg quality that has been decided on by the wiki developers. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 18:56, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

- Jmabel ! talk 19:33, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Help[edit]

I have been blocked and I do not understand why. I own a business called Johnson Woolen Mills and maybe I wasn't supposed to set up a WIKI account with that name? Maybe that's why I'm blocked? But we purchased this business last year and you have a logo listed as the previous owners and not ours and also the history is incorrect and I have sources to site. I need help please. Johnsonwoolenmills (talk) 19:05, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You were blocked not here (on Commons) but in English Wikipedia. See en:User_talk:Johnsonwoolenmills for details. Ruslik (talk) 19:11, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Johnsonwoolenmills Company names are not allowed as account names at english wikipedia. Here at commons you can upload any logo of any company including your own company provided the logo is either below ToO and PD, or it has a free license. If neither is the case the logo must not be uploaded. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 17:46, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unsure if what I have downloaded is in the public domain[edit]

Hi, I have uploaded File:The battle of the Trebbia (1799) map.jpg
Map from 1837, the rights have expired as I know, but on the website page at the bottom left where I got this image from (see image source) there is a copyright mark. Does this refer to the image, can I clarify? Kolya Muratov (talk) 11:49, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Kolya Muratov: Pretty much anything that old is going to be public domain. There are a few very strange exceptions, mostly having to do with royal families just declaring that they own copyright in perpetuity. But if you slip up on that, nobody's gonna hold it against you. Since Friedrich Rudolf von Rothenburg seems to have lived in Germany before there was a Germany, I'm guessing you're okay. GMGtalk 11:55, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do I upload my family history story[edit]

I have written my family history story to share for the community to enjoy reading about life events of my family in a real community. Rick Hawkeye (talk) 13:11, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Rick Hawkeye: It almost certainly does not belong on Commons, Wikipedia, or any other WMF site. Even if your family is notable enough to merit coverage in an encyclopedia, a family history written by a family member, unless first published by a reputable publisher, would almost certainly fall foul of the policies on conflicts of interest, e.g. WP:COI.
There are, of course, many places on the web (including a site of your own) where you could publish such a thing, but WMF projects are almost certainly not the right places. - Jmabel ! talk 17:50, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do all new uploads get checked?[edit]

If it is not routine for new uploads to be checked, can someone please look at

The helmsman's position can be seen behind the lower balustraded opening between the two lower companionways.

Whilst I am pretty sure this has a suitable creative commons licence, I am not totally certain that I have chosen the correct one – should this have a country-specific licence? ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 20:24, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

License appears to be correct. Source states cc-by-sa 4.0. Abzeronow (talk) 20:38, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is no single process that ensures that all new uploads are checked, but some users choose to make it a point to do this and some conditions will make it more or less likely to be visible to others. —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:41, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ThoughtIdRetired: Free licenses, such as CC BY, are issued by the copyright owner to apply worldwide. Although CC licenses versions before version 4.0 may exist in some localized country adaptations, they apply worldwide. Therefore, free licensed works do not need an additional country-specific tag on Wikimedia Commons. On an unrelated suggestion, I think it could be useful to use the add note tool to help readers identify what is where on the image. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:20, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

PD-textlogo: Too complex, or can it be more complex?[edit]

Hello! this logo, marked as PD-textlogo, is one I feel does express plenty of originality, but I presume the law considers it public domain as "The [U.S. Copyright] Office typically refuses claims [of calligraphy]...regardless of how novel and creative the shape and form of the typeface characters may be." (Source, Section 906.4)

If it does, I wonder if the same could be said about the colored and textured logo here. I ask because Wikimedia is the only place I've seen the Jak & Daxter logo displayed in all black, having been a fan of the game since childhood. Thank you in advance for any assistance! Kaasterly (talk) 22:09, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Heads up that your second link did not render to me. This works, tho: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/logopedia/images/f/f0/Jak_and_Daxter.png Speaking as a non-lawyer, simply taking something that is public domain and adding a color gradient to it does not meet the threshold of originality in the United States. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:34, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, let me revise that somewhat: there is some 3-D embossing and debossing on it, so it's more than just a gradient. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:36, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
